The I-40 run, and one thing to check first
Tennessee families reach us along I-40, straight east through the mountains. It is one of the prettier drives in the region and, for East Tennessee at least, a very manageable one.
One piece of local knowledge worth having. The stretch of I-40 through the Pigeon River Gorge between Newport and the North Carolina line closes with some regularity — rockslides, wrecks, winter weather. It is a beautiful piece of road and a temperamental one.
Check NCDOT and TDOT conditions before you set out on pickup day. If it is shut, the detour adds real time. We would always rather move your collection day than have you fighting a closure with a new puppy in the car.

Same mountains, same weather, same kind of life
East Tennessee and western North Carolina are much the same country — mountains, lakes, trails, a lot of time outdoors. The dog that suits life in Knoxville or the Tri-Cities suits life here, and our puppies are raised in the same weather and the same terrain you will take them home to.
Standard Poodles were bred as water retrievers, which makes them a genuinely good fit for a state with this much water. Norris, Douglas, Cherokee, Watauga, the Tennessee River — a Standard Poodle will swim all day and thank you for it. They are athletic, they have real endurance in the hills, and they are clever enough to be trusted off lead once properly trained.
Grooming. Every six to eight weeks for life. Knoxville and the Tri-Cities are well served; if you are somewhere more rural, find your groomer before the puppy comes home rather than after, and book ahead — the good ones fill up.
Ticks. East Tennessee has them badly, and a poodle coat hides them well. Get into the habit of running your hands over the dog after time in long grass or woods, and talk to your vet about prevention early.
Winter. A single coat dries slowly. If your dog swims in cold weather, dry it properly before the drive home.

It happens. Check TDOT and NCDOT conditions before travelling, and call us — we will happily reschedule rather than have you drive a long detour with a new puppy.

Sometimes, depending on timing and what else we have on. Ask us rather than assuming the answer is no.
Are Standard Poodles good for an outdoor, active family?
Very. They are working retrievers under the haircut — strong swimmers with genuine stamina in the hills, and clever enough to be trusted off lead once trained.
