Asheville is our nearest city — about 45 minutes east of you on I-40, down through the Old Fort grade and out into the foothills. If you are in Asheville, Black Mountain, Weaverville or Hendersonville, we are an easy morning out.
At that distance there is no good reason to buy a puppy sight unseen. Come and meet the parent dogs, see where the puppies sleep, and ask us awkward questions. We would much rather you did.
One winter caveat. The Old Fort grade between Black Mountain and Marion can get genuinely nasty in ice, and we would far rather reschedule than have you drive it in bad weather with a new puppy in the car. Call us and we will find another day.

A poodle is a mountain dog, whatever it looks like
Asheville families tend to want a dog that can actually come along — up Max Patch, out to Mount Mitchell, along the DuPont trails, in the boat on Lake James. There is a persistent idea that Standard Poodles are decorative, delicate animals. It is completely wrong, and it comes from the show clip rather than the dog underneath.
Standard Poodles were bred as water retrievers. That famous continental clip is a working pattern — shaved for mobility in cold water, coat left over the joints and chest for insulation. Underneath is an athletic, powerfully built, strong-swimming gundog with real endurance.
They are also thinkers, which makes them excellent off-lead companions once trained. They check in, they read the situation, and they are not inclined to disappear over a ridge after a deer the way a hound will.
Two honest warnings, because you should hear them from us.
Burrs, seeds and mud. A poodle coat collects everything the trail has to offer. Beggar's lice, burdock and grass seed work into the hair and knot it fast. A short trail clip through summer and autumn makes life dramatically easier, and a brush-through after every hike takes five minutes and saves you a matted mess.
Wet coat in cold weather. A single coat dries slower than a double coat. A soaked poodle on a 35-degree ridge in November gets cold. Carry a towel, dry the dog before the drive home, and think twice about long winter swims.
Neither is a reason not to have one here. Plenty of our dogs live exactly this life. They are just the things nobody tells you before you buy.

How far are you from Asheville?
About 45 miles, roughly 45 minutes east on I-40. Black Mountain is nearer still at around 35 minutes.
Can a Standard Poodle really keep up on serious hikes?
Yes. They were bred as working retrievers and have the build and stamina for it. Wait until the growth plates have closed before long or steep days with a young dog — we will talk you through the timing.
Do they swim?
Enthusiastically. It is what the breed was developed to do.
Is the coat a problem on the trail?
It needs managing rather than avoiding. Keep it short through the trail season and brush after hikes. Asheville has good groomers and a fair number of mobile ones — plan on every six to eight weeks.
What Standard Poodle colors are available?
Black, red, apricot, cream, silver, phantom, parti and tricolor. Availability varies by litter, and we price per litter rather than charging more for particular colors.
Can we come and visit?
Please do. You are the closest of all our families and there is no good reason to buy a puppy sight unseen from 45 minutes away.
