Standard Poodle Information

Everything you need to know about the Standard Poodle — one of the world's most intelligent, elegant, and family-friendly breeds.

About the Standard Poodle

The Standard Poodle is one of the oldest and most distinguished dog breeds in the world. Despite their reputation for elegance and beauty, Standard Poodles were originally bred as working dogs — specifically as water retrievers. Their intelligence, athleticism, and trainability made them exceptional working companions, and these qualities remain central to the breed today.

Standard Poodles consistently rank among the top 2 most intelligent dog breeds in the world. They are eager to please, quick to learn, and thrive on mental stimulation and human connection. Whether you want a therapy dog, an agility competitor, a hunting companion, or simply the world's best family pet — the Standard Poodle can do it all.

  • Easily trained — they pick up commands quickly and love to learn

Are Standard Poodles Hypoallergenic?

Standard Poodles are one of the best choices for allergy sufferers. They have hair rather than fur, which means they shed very minimally and produce less dander than most breeds. While no dog is 100% hypoallergenic, Standard Poodles are consistently recommended by allergists as one of the safest breeds for families with dog allergies.

Grooming

Standard Poodles require regular grooming to keep their coats healthy and tangle-free. Most owners take their Poodles to a professional groomer every 6–8 weeks. Between appointments, regular brushing (2–3 times per week) helps prevent matting. Their ears should also be checked and cleaned regularly as they are prone to ear infections.

See our Poodle Clips page for information on popular grooming styles.

Exercise Needs

Standard Poodles are active dogs that need daily exercise. Plan for at least 30–60 minutes of physical activity per day — walks, fetch, swimming, or off-leash play in a fenced yard. They also need mental stimulation — puzzle toys, training sessions, and social interaction keep them happy and well-behaved.
