Standard Poodle Grooming: A Beginner’s Guide to Coat Care

That gorgeous, curly, non-shedding coat is one of the biggest reasons families fall for the Standard Poodle — but it’s also the part that surprises new owners most. A poodle’s coat doesn’t shed out the door like other breeds; it keeps growing, and without regular care it mats quickly. The good news? With a simple routine and the right tools, keeping your Standard Poodle looking and feeling great is completely manageable, even if you’ve never groomed a dog in your life. Here’s what 30+ years of raising poodles has taught us.

Why the Poodle Coat Is Different

Most breeds have a double coat that sheds in seasonal cycles. A Standard Poodle has a single-layer coat made of dense, curly hair that grows continuously, much like human hair. That’s exactly what makes them low-shedding and so friendly to allergy sufferers — but it also means the loose hair doesn’t fall away. Instead, it stays in the coat, and if it isn’t brushed out, it tangles into mats against the skin. Understanding that one difference is the key to everything else about poodle grooming.

Brushing: The Most Important Habit

If you do nothing else, brush your poodle. Regular brushing is what prevents mats before they start, and it’s far easier than dealing with them after the fact. Aim for a thorough brush-out several times a week, working all the way down to the skin rather than just over the surface — mats love to form in the “hidden” spots behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar.

A quality slicker brush is your everyday workhorse. We use the Chris Christensen Big G on our own dogs because its long pins work through a dense poodle coat far better than a standard pet-store brush. For tangles that have already tightened up, a dedicated dematting comb lets you break them apart gently without pulling at the skin. Keep both on hand and you’ll be ready for whatever the coat throws at you.

Bathing and Keeping the Coat Fresh

Standard Poodles do well with a bath every three to four weeks — often enough to stay clean and reduce dander, but not so often that you dry out their skin. Use a gentle, soap-free formula made for dogs; we like Jeffers Baby Powder Conditioning Shampoo because it cleans without stripping the coat’s natural oils. One important tip: always brush out mats before a bath, never after. Water tightens existing tangles into dense knots that are much harder to remove.

Between baths, a quick spritz of a light pet cologne keeps your poodle smelling fresh — a small thing our families always appreciate.

Don’t Forget Ears, Nails, and Feet

Poodle grooming goes beyond the coat. Because poodles have hair that grows inside the ear canal and ears that trap moisture, they’re more prone to ear issues than many breeds. Keep the ears clean and dry with a gentle, vet-developed ear cleanser, and check them regularly. Nails should be trimmed every few weeks — a sturdy, plier-style nail clipper gives you the control to do it safely at home. And the hair between the paw pads benefits from regular trimming to keep your poodle comfortable and sure-footed.

Professional Grooming vs. Doing It Yourself

Most Standard Poodle owners land somewhere in the middle: regular brushing, ear care, and nail trims at home, with a professional groomer handling the full clip every six to eight weeks. There’s no single “right” haircut — poodles can be styled in everything from a low-maintenance pet trim to the elaborate show clips the breed is famous for. If you’re curious about the different styles, our Poodle Clips page walks through the options. Whichever you choose, the at-home brushing routine stays the same, and it’s what keeps your dog comfortable between appointments.

A Coat Worth the Effort

It’s true that a Standard Poodle asks more of you at grooming time than a short-haired breed does. But families who keep up a simple routine will tell you it’s a small price for a dog that doesn’t shed all over the house, doesn’t trigger their allergies, and always looks elegant. Build the habit early — ideally from the day your puppy comes home — and it becomes second nature for both of you.
