The Labradoodle has been one of the most popular “designer dogs” in America for nearly three decades. Walk through any neighborhood and you’re bound to spot one — shaggy, friendly, and usually wearing a bandana. But if you’re seriously researching your next family dog, it’s worth slowing down and looking at how a Labradoodle actually stacks up against a purebred Standard Poodle before you make a decision you’ll live with for the next 12 years.
Where the Labradoodle Came From
The Labradoodle was first intentionally bred in Australia in the late 1980s, originally with the goal of creating a guide dog suitable for allergy sufferers. The idea was simple: cross a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle and get the best of both. It was a noble experiment — but even Wally Conron, the man who created the first Labradoodle, has publicly expressed regret about what the crossbreeding trend eventually became, citing unpredictable traits and a flood of irresponsible breeding.
That’s not a knock on Labradoodles as dogs. It’s important context about what you’re actually buying.
How They Compare
Coat and Shedding This is where a lot of Labradoodle buyers get surprised. Because Labradoodles are a mixed breed, their coat type is genuinely unpredictable — even within the same litter. Some puppies inherit the Poodle’s low-shedding curl. Others get the Lab’s dense, heavy-shedding double coat. There’s no way to know for certain which way a puppy will go until they’re older. Standard Poodles, by contrast, have a consistent single-layer coat that doesn’t shed. Every time. No surprises.
Allergy Friendliness For the same reason, Labradoodles can’t reliably be called hypoallergenic. If you or someone in your household has dog allergies, a Standard Poodle is the far safer choice — their coat is consistent, their dander production is low, and there’s no guesswork involved.
Size Standard Poodles are a well-defined size — typically 45–70 pounds and 21–27 inches at the shoulder. Labradoodles vary significantly depending on which parent’s genes dominate and whether a Standard or Miniature Poodle was used in breeding. Adult size can be genuinely unpredictable.
Temperament Both breeds are friendly, social, and good with families. Labrador Retrievers are famously easygoing and food-motivated. Poodles are more sensitive and deeply in tune with their owners — they notice everything, which makes them exceptional at reading a room and responding to your emotions. Standard Poodles are also among the most trainable dogs in the world, consistently ranking in the top two or three on canine intelligence lists.
Health and Longevity Purebred Standard Poodles from health-tested parents have well-documented health profiles and breed-specific screening protocols. Reputable breeders test for hip dysplasia, eye conditions, and other known issues — and those results are documented and verifiable. Labradoodles don’t have a breed club, breed standard, or mandatory health testing requirements. Quality varies enormously from breeder to breeder.
What You’re Really Paying For
Here’s something worth knowing: a well-bred Standard Poodle from a reputable breeder often costs the same as — or less than — a Labradoodle from a quality breeder. Yet the Standard Poodle comes with documented lineage, AKC registration, and generations of carefully selected traits. When you buy a mixed breed, you’re paying for a look and a hope. When you buy a purebred from a responsible breeder, you’re paying for certainty.
